Veterans Day!


We celebrated Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th. Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed annually on November 11th. It is a day for honoring military veterans. Veterans are people who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is held on the anniversary of the end of World War I in order to honor United States veterans and victims of all wars. On this day, we give thanks to the people who have risked their lives to fight for our country. Other countries celebrate Veterans Day, too, in their own ways; however, the name of the day and the types of commemorations differ slightly. Do you know anyone who is a veteran? If so, be sure to thank them for their service on this day!

Military (adjective)- relating to or characteristic of soldiers or armed forces
Served (verb)- fought for the country at war
World War I (noun)- a major conflict fought between 1914 and 1918 between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers of the world
Victims (noun)- a person harmed, injured, or killed as a result of a crime, accident, or other event or action.
Give thanks (verb)- express gratitude or show appreciation to
Commemorations (noun)- remembrance, typically expressed in a ceremony
Slightly (adverb)- to a small degree; not considerably

Grammar Point
The passage above uses different types of punctuation. There are different types of punctuation used in writing. These are the marks, such as period, comma, and parentheses. They are used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and to clarify meaning.

Examples of punctuation used in the passage above are:
Period: a period is used at the end of a sentence .
Question Mark: is used at the end of a sentence when asking a question ?
Exclamation Point: used at the end of a sentence and are meant to display admiration or express excitement, astonishment, or some other strong emotion !


Grammar Exercise
Write a brief thank you note to a veteran. Be sure to use at least 3 different types of punctuation in your writing.

    Good explanation and graphics! I like the writing assignment very much. Be sure to make your definitions simpler than the word you are defining for ESL students. For example, "military" could be a word that describes the army or navy or air force. Even the word armed forces could be challenging and might need to be defined.

Over the weekend, I visited some friends of mine from college . I went to college at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, New York. I graduated from Oneonta this past May and I have many friends who still go to the school. It has been a long time since I have seen my friends and I am so glad that I was able to take the trip this weekend to reunite with them. Back to School!

September has arrived! I hope you are as excited as I am to kick off the new school year! A couple of things that I always look forward to are meeting new students, going on school trips, and learning new things. It can be difficult to get back in the routine of things after being home for summer vacation, but the beginning of the school year is a very thrilling time! It is a time filled with many activities, excitement, and fun! It is important to follow your teacher's directions to have an easy transition into your new class. It may seem intimidating entering a class with new peers , however , it is important that you remain confident, engaged , and willing to learn! You will adjust to your new class in no time! Halloween!

This past weekend, I celebrated Halloween with my friends. We watched scary movies, ate candy, and got dressed up. After handing out candy to trick-or-treaters at my house, we went to a Halloween party that my friend w as hosting . We witnessed so many different costumes, both scary and creative . Halloween is a day celebrated on October 31st, where people dress up in costume and children walk around the neighborhood,  knocking on doors, and asking for candy; this is called trick-or-treating. The greeting "trick-or-treat" is used as a humorous   threat of jokes and tricks if they are not given a small gift or treat. Many people like to celebrate the spirit of Halloween by watching horror films or going to haunted houses.  Vocabulary Hosting (noun)-  a person who receives or entertains other people as guests. Witnessed (verb)-  see (an event, or thing) take place. Creative (adjective)-  involving imagination or original ideas, production of an artistic work.
